Each year, the Oscars are the premier event for fashion, save fashion week itself. It's like prom for celebrities. Instead of offering new ideas and trends, however, Oscar looks tend to be more classic and universally-pleasing. Sure, there are outliers, but the majority of dresses flatter and incite favorable responses. It's refreshing and pleasant, especially in the current political climate, to sit and watch gorgeous celebrities in beautiful dresses for an evening.
I rounded up some of my favorite looks in the slideshow above. Emma Stone, my current obsession and celebrity crush, looks like an Oscar statue in her beaded Givenchy gown. Brie Larson and Viola Davis remain incredible in simple, solid-colored silhouettes. In my book, Janelle Monáe wins for prettiest gown in a black Elie Saab with gold and silver detailing. They're all, without a doubt, "pretty dresses," and maybe that's just what we need.
